The Fate of a Film

The fate of a film

Although films mostly express their own history, sometimes, each film script has its own destiny. The story of Kabul Safe City, which was originally a novel, attracted the attention of an important publisher in France. When the publisher found out that I had never published any other novel in France, he was a little disappointed and lost his enthusiasm.

With some effort, I turned the novel into a script. Despite the warm welcome from the cinema industry, I did not find a producer who would go to Afghanistan to make a film. When Leena Alam, my main actress, read the script, she felt a strange excitement and said that she had rarely read such a beautiful story.

The script quickly passed from hand to hand in Kabul. Leena Alam tried her best to get our good artists to join the project. Nasir al-Qas was very kind. He introduced me another film maker who was accepting to gave me his cinema equipment for a small amount. With a lot of courage I went to Kabul. Many actors got the news and wanted to meet me. Everyone tried to be a part of the film without huge financial expectation. They gave me a wellcomed helping hand, and with all their efforts, the filming was completed in without major complications.

I returned to Paris again. In those days, there were many closures in my work. I had to do everything alone. The all post production works required a lot of finesse and a large amount of budget. Sometimes I felt that I could no longer finish the film. Countless nights, days and days passed. I discovered that a work of art must consume countless moments of life to become alive.

The fate of the country was once again subjected to a terrible storm. With the dramatic changes of the situation, I also let history enter the film little by little. New changes created other obstacles.

Everyone to whom I have shown the film is amazed by the story, the quality of the acting, the beauty of the images and the emotion that invades you while watching the film. A woman cinefile told me that this rare product has nothing to envy to the big films produced by the big production companies. What to do when you are almost unknown and that your origin country is not famous for its Cinema and no one suspects the existence of rare talents in a country where art is condemned by hordes of uneducated fanatics.

For that alone, this artistic work, which is the fruit of several years of work by a meticulous and tireless cinema enthusiast, deserves to be explored and brought to the attention of the cinema-loving public…
